Probably best known for her appearances on
The Daily Show and
This American Life, Sarah Vowell is also the author of several volumes exploring the strange and surprising history of America, the latest of which
, Unfamiliar Fishes, takes a typically skewed look at how Hawaii became our fiftieth state. Vowell be at Milwaukee's
Boswell Books on Friday to talk about the book, but, sadly, all of the tickets are now long gone. To mark the occasion though, I examine Vowell's unique ability to make learning American history not just fascinating, but downright funny.
